They say growing up is hard to do. Adolescence is a period of great physical and psychological change. We contend with our own identity and future, whilst in the vulnerable state of emergence.
As I make these portraits I aim to be present with my subject yet their future and my past weigh heavy. I project the uncertainty of the world they inherit and am reminded of my own coming of age in all its awkward intensity.
But I am also curious to look beyond the personal and at the representation itself. I am interested in seeing what it looks like to make a photograph, a fraction of a second, that references the mere surface of an extremely temporal experience in human development.
We try to hold on to something so fleeting, but how can any one instance hold any truth in the face of such rapid change? How can a portrait reveal the depth of a character-in-the-works and the multitude of options before them? I don't think it can but I try just the same.
PORTRAIT COMMISSIONS
If this project resonates with you, if you have a teenager in your life whose particular moment you'd like to hold onto, I'd love to make a portrait together. These commissions are how the series grows, and each one matters to me as both a collaboration and an enduring art object. I work slowly and intentionally, and I bring that same care to every family I photograph.
Every commission includes a shooting session and a signed, editioned archival print. The process is unhurried by design.
Process:
I shoot analog film and work with a view camera. The process is slow and labored but that is part of the connection and presence in the photographs. Each shooting session takes 30-60 minutes per subject and location. Afterward, you will have at least three portrait options to choose from, and your final selection will be delivered as a signed, editioned archival print, framed upon request.
Pricing:
Portrait commission: $2,500 - includes one hour session and one 20x25in signed, editioned archival pigment print
